Facial recognition technology has been widely applied to ATM machines, access control systems, payment services, and attendance systems, bringing great convenience for users, but also potential safety hazards, Legal Daily reported on Sept. 19.

An employee selling facial recognition equipment disclosed that the price for the equipment varies from several hundred yuan to more than 10,000 RMB, with higher priced equipment being more accurate.

Insiders also noted that the equipment can still work even if people wear make-up, as the technology selects points on the face, and then calculates the distance among the points to create a unique pattern. The infrared probes on the equipment also address the problem of dim light.

An Internet user said on China’s Quora-like service Zhihu that despite the high accuracy of facial recognition technology, it does not come without risk, because it can still be tricked by emulational masks.

In general, app developers do not develop the technology but obtain the function by accessing third-party APIs or SDK components. There are many loopholes in the technology, from access to real use. For example, if the program is modified, a still photograph could pass the facial recognition, said Gao Tingyu, a security researcher at Ping An Technology.

However, Gao also stressed that the security of the technology in the financial industry is usually higher than that in attendance systems and other apps. If the financial app detects an anomaly, other verification methods such as message authentication code or bank card information, would be required.
