OZ Encounter: Aussies are experts when it comes to coffee

(People's Daily Online)    14:30, August 25, 2017

Did you know 95% of the cafes throughout Australia are independently owned, meaning every café has a unique style?

If you take a walk on the streets of Sydney, you can’t help but feel like this city is a “paradise” for coffee lovers. To Aussies, coffee has become a vital part of their life, especially the popular “flat white”. Invented by Australians, a “flat white” is the most common order for many Australians.

“If I am not at home, I should be at the café. If I am not at the café, I must be on my way there” – this is the epitome of an Australian.

Relias Desserts, the only patisserie in the southern hemisphere that is a member of the world’s most prestigious patisserie organization, have a variety of coffee and desserts equivalent to Michelin stars. Compared to other coffees, the flat white here is much richer and smoother.

For Australians, coffee is not just an instant drink. Everyone has their favourite café server and his or her own favourite way of drinking coffee.

Next, the chef of La Renaissance Patisserie shares his thoughts about drinking a flat white.

“There are several coffees that really suit the Australian culture, the flat white being one of them. Here is more about you wake up in the morning and get one coffee. You might get one in the afternoon, but that’s it,” said Jean-Michel Reynaud, head pastry chef.

“For me, what I like to do is you take your flat white, you take a croissant and then you dip it into your flat white and you eat the croissant. Believe me, it’s strange, but the flavor that you get is just incredible.”

Similar to a latte or cappuccino, a flat white uses Italian espresso, hot milk and milk foam. However, it is smaller in volume and has less micro foam. It is the best choice for those who enjoy coffee but don’t want it too strong.

Australia clearly has a unique coffee culture of it’s own, influenced from its large European immigrant population.
