Some 100 Cameroonian students have been offered scholarships by the Chinese government and Confucius Institute to study in China as from the 2017/2018 academic year. The first set of recipients is expected in China any day from now.

A source at the Cameroon Embassy in Beijing said undergraduate students will study Chinese language for a year before beginning their courses proper; while postgraduate students who will study in English will start right away upon arrival in the country.

Farewell ceremony

A farewell ceremony for the students held in the Chinese Embassy in Cameroon in the capital, Yaounde, on August 17 in the presence of Ambassador Wei Wenhua and Cameroon’s Minister of Higher Education, Prof. Jacques Fame Ndongo. The students received scholarship attestations after studying Chinese language and culture for a year at the Confucius Institute in Yaounde.

“China is a great nation with the world’s second largest economy. We expect much from our young students who are going to study there, and hope that when they complete their studies, they will return home with certificates, skills and knowledge to contribute to the development of our nation,” Prof. Jacques Fame Ndongo said.

Regular Chinese scholarships

“The scholarships concern almost all sectors such as agriculture, education, medicine, technology, etc. Cooperation between Cameroon and China in education is going on well. Each year, the Chinese government offers about 30 scholarships to Cameroonians, in addition to those by Confucius Institute,” Ambassador Wei Wenhua noted.

“Cameroon does not have enough environmental engineers. I am going to China to study the latest technology in this domain to help my country,” one of the scholarship recipients told the press.

According to Wei Wenhua, more than 300 Cameroonians last year travelled to China to take part in various training sessions, including 77 recipients of Chinese government and Confucius Institute scholarships. In a bid to encourage Cameroonians to take their studies more seriously, the Chinese Ambassador to Cameroon Prize was established last December in the University of Yaounde II.
