China funds Madagascar for construction of road for egg producers

ANTANANARIVO, Aug. 18 -- The Chinese government will fund the construction of a road for egg producers in Madagascar, representatives from the two countries confirmed during a signing ceremony for the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) of the project in Antananarivo, Madagascar's capital.

"The idea to create this road project began when egg producers in the town of Mahitsy in the outskirts of Madagascar's capital Antananarivo complained to President Hery Rajaonarimampianina that most of their eggs are broken on road because of poor road conditions," Madagascar's minister of Public Works Eric Razafimandimby said on Friday.

He signed the MOU of the project with the representative of the Chinese Agency for International Economic Cooperation (AIECO) Ai Yinfang.

"This 20-kilometer-road, linking two villages of Ampanotokana and Mahazaza, will serve the egg production area in the town of Mahitsy," Minister Eric Razafimandimby said.

"The road will be tarred and equipped with road safety facilities and designed according to international standard," Eric Razafimandimby said.

Eric Razafimandimby added that the road testifies the good diplomatic relationship, which began in 1972 when the two countries established diplomatic ties.

"This shows that the Chinese government takes a dedicated spirit and attaches a friendly sense to the Malagasy people," the AIECO representative said, adding that the egg road is to solve the difficulties of egg transportation.

Ai said that the road will secure 150,000 eggs per day and more and more farmers can create their fortunes with it.

The road project is one of six projects discussed by Madagascar's president Hery Rajaonarimampianina with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping during his official visit in China in March 2017. The integration of Madagascar into the Belt and Road initiative proposed by the Chinese President is the overall objective of these agreements.
