Three Chinese injured during Barcelona attack

(People's Daily Online)    16:58, August 18, 2017

Three Chinese tourists were injured during a terrorist attack on Thursday in Barcelona, according to China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hua Chunying has confirmed that three Chinese tourists were injured in the attack.

Two Taiwanese Friday were badly injured and are now receiving medical treatment. Another victim from Hong Kong suffered minor injuries and has since been discharged from the hospital.

“The shop owner told us to close the door immediately when I was serving my clients. Then I heard noises outside, while our guard said he had seen a van hitting people,” a Chinese female surnamed Liu, who worked in Barcelona told Thepaper.cn.

“We’ve been hiding in our basement for three hours already, and we don’t know when we can get out of here. We can only get updates of the incident from social media and media outlets here,” said Liu.

The terrorist attack, which claimed 13 lives and injured 80 others, happened on the famous street of Las Ramblas Thursday afternoon as a van rammed into the crowd of people and caused public panic.

The consulate has issued a warning, advising all Chinese citizens not to approach the area where the attack happened. The incident has worried many Chinese tourists who wish to spend their upcoming national holiday in Spain, with many cancelling their plans.

“I’ve decided to give up my travel plan to Barcelona next month, because it might be unsafe to go there after what happened. I’m not sure if the terrorists have accomplices, or if another attack will take place in the near future,” said Wu Jinyun, a 27-year IT engineer based in Beijing.

“I hope tourism will not be affected by the incident, as it is the pillar of Barcelona’s economy. I hope Chinese tourists will come to our city, as they account for a large proportion of our tourism market,” said Mirea Álvarez, a travel agent in Barcelona.
