Internet users call for investigation into child obscenity

(People's Daily Online)    17:07, August 14, 2017

Photos of a teenage girl being sexually harassed at a train station in Nanjing went viral over the weekend, igniting public wrath and protests online.

The photos, which were first posted to Sina Weibo on Aug. 13 by Chen Lan, a Chinese writer, show a teenage girl being hugged and touched by a young man at the Nanjing South Railway Station. The man, who is allegedly a family member of the girl, put his hands into the girl’s shirt for around five minutes. The girl, whose face is covered with mosaics in the pictures, showed no objection to the sexual assault. The scene was recorded by a female who sent the pictures to Chen, hoping netizens could help identify the victim and perpetrator.

“There were many people at the scene, but none of them tried to stop the [sexual assault against the girl.] I’m worried that the girl and the man might be related, as the girl’s guardian could use ‘family affection’ as an excuse to exculpate the perpetrator,” Chen told Yangzi Evening News on Aug. 13.

The incident quick went viral online. The hashtag “GirlBeingAssultedInNanjingnanStation” garnered over 210 million page views as of press time, with furious netizens calling for police to investigate the incident.

As of press time, the Nanjing Police Bureau has issued an announcement, noting that the man has been identified, while the victim is less than 10 years old. The bureau has also called for less exposure of the victim, in an effort to protect the underage girl.

“I hope China can perfect its child service system. Once such an incident happens, the underage victim should be immediately protected and separated from the perpetrator, while medical and physiological treatment should be offered to the kids,” said Chen.
