China's nuclear facilities were not damaged and the nuclear radiation environment was unaffected by this week’s earthquakes, the Ministry of Environmental Protection said on August 9.
No nuclear employee was injured or killed in the quakes, the ministry added.
A 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck Jiuzhaigou in southwest China's Sichuan province on August 8 and another temblor occurred on August 9 in Jinghe county in northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.
Meanwhile, Minister Li Ganjie has directed radiation safety monitoring stations in the two quake-jolted areas to keep close track so as to prevent secondary disasters from affecting surrounding nuclear facilities and thereby endanger radiation safety.
