Pakistan on Thursday called the Indian deputy high commissioner and lodged protest over the recent cross-border shelling by Indian forces that killed one soldier and two civilians.

It is the second time in two days Pakistan has summoned the Indian envoy amid escalations along the Line of Control (LoC), the de facto border between the two countries in the disputed Kashmir region.

The military earlier said that Indian forces violated the ceasefire agreement and shelled several areas along LoC in Kashmir on Wednesday. Two soldiers and five civilians were also injured in the latest firing.

The Director General South Asian desk at the Foreign Ministry summoned the Indian Deputy High Commissioner on Thursday and condemned the unprovoked ceasefire violations by the Indian occupation forces in Nikial and Nezapir Sectors on July 19, the foreign ministry said in a statement.

"The deliberate targeting of civilians is indeed deplorable and contrary to human dignity and international human rights and humanitarian laws," the Pakistani side told the Indian diplomat, according to the statement.

The Pakistani side also urged India to respect the 2003 ceasefire arrangement, investigate this and other incidents of ceasefire violations.

Pakistan and India had declared ceasefire along the LoC in 2003.
