Chinese envoy to UN urges countries to forge synergy for common development

(Xinhua)    15:43, July 20, 2017

A Chinese envoy to the United Nations (UN) on Wednesday urged countries to continue to make development a priority and aim at common prosperity.

Liu Jieyi, China's permanent representative to the UN, made the remarks in his statement at the Ministerial Meeting of The High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) on Sustainable Development.

"Implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development is our core task in the development field and a shared responsibility of the international community," he said.

Countries need to align their national development strategies with the 2030 Agenda and link their national development with that of other countries and regions as well as important international cooperation initiatives in order to achieve the effect of mutual promotion, Liu said.

The HLPF, the UN's central platform for follow-up and review of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals, was held on July 10-19 under the auspices of the Economic and Social Council, including the three-day ministerial meeting on July 17-19.

In his statement, Liu called on all parties concerned to strengthen their partnership and forge synergy for development.

"Countries need to work together to build a new type of global partnership for development and construct a cooperation structure with the UN as the core, North-South cooperation as the main channel and South-South cooperation as a supplement," he said.

Liu also stressed the need to maintain an open and inclusive approach and improve the environment for development.

"Countries need to abide by the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter, foster a strong sense of a community of shared future for mankind and create a new type of international relations with win-win cooperation as the core," said Liu.

There is a need to build an open and inclusive world economy, preserve the multilateral trade system, and tap new potential for economic growth, he added.
