27 contact lenses found in senior woman's eye

(Xinhua)    13:30, July 18, 2017

A mass of 27 contact lens was found in an English woman's right eye, which shocked the patient herself as well as her doctors, according to recent reports.

The woman, 67, was scheduled for routine cataract surgery in November but when an anesthetist named Richard Crombie tried to inject the anesthetic in her eye, he noticed "a blue mass" under her top eyelid.

According to an article published in the British Medical Journal earlier this month by the ophthalmic team in charge of the woman's surgery, the "blue mass" was a clump of 17 lenses and another 10 were found in an additional examination.

"We were all shocked," said Rupal Morjaria, one of the three authors of the paper and an ophthalmologist at Solihull Hospital in Britain.

The patient said she thought it's only her age that caused her poor vision and eyes' grittiness but never doubted anything such as having lenses inside.

It's unclear how long the contact lenses had been in her eye for she didn't report any problem other than cataracts for years.

The woman has reportedly worn monthly disposable lenses for 35 years. She told the surgeons that she sometimes couldn't find a contact len when she wanted to remove it from the right eye so she assumed it was just lost somewhere outside her eye.

Morjaria said the team wanted to publicize the case in a bid to raise awareness of contact wearers, reminding them to wear lenses properly and have their eyes checked promptly if any uncomfortableness is felt.

The woman's surgery was postponed after the contacts were removed.
