Man with ‘through the looking glass' body survives cancer surgery

By Li Yan (People's Daily Online)    17:09, July 11, 2017

Before having a rectal carcinoma removed from his body, a man told the doctor that his organs were placed in mirror image to the norm.

The picture shows the organs' positions in Mr Zhang's body  (left) and in the body of an ordinary person.

Surgery on the 41-year-old was successfully carried out on July 4 in Wenzhou Medical College’s Second Affiliated Hospital, Wenzhou, in east China’s Zhejiang province.

The patient’s liver is on the left, the spleen on the right, and so is his intestinal tract. This explains why surgery was more difficult and lasted long.

Before the surgery, doctors seriously considered how to prevent errors and what might happen in the event of any. It took almost 5 hours before they took the rectal carcinoma out of the patient’s body, two hours longer than normal.

The patient is currently recovering at a good pace as the rare condition did not affect surgery.
