Yemeni government cuts diplomatic ties with Qatar over supporting "extremist groups"

ADEN, Yemen, June 5 (Xinhua) -- The internationally recognized government of Yemen announced Monday the severing of diplomatic ties with Qatar following similar decisions made by Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Libya and the United Arab Emirates.

According to a statement issued by Yemen's Official Saba News Agency, "the decision of severing diplomatic ties with Qatar took place as a result of Qatar's clear actions and its links with the groups behind the Shiite Houthi coup."

The statement accused Qatar of "providing support for different extremist groups in Yemen, in contradiction with the main goals announced by the Arab countries in helping the legitimate government."

Yemen government statement also backed the decision of ending Qatar's participation in the Saudi-led, anti-Houthi Arab coalition.

The Saudi-funded Arabiya TV channel confirmed in its breaking news dispatch that Yemen's government officially severed relations with Qatar in a clear support for the decisions declared by a number of Arab countries earlier in the day.

Qatar was a member of the Saudi-led Arab coalition and participated in the military campaign in Yemen since March 2015.

Yemeni observers say that the unprecedented tension in the region may badly affect the recent crisis in Yemen.

Earlier in the day, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Bahrain, Libya and the United Arab Emirates announced the severing of diplomatic ties with Qatar, as they accused the Gulf state of supporting terrorism.

The official Saudi news agency SPA said in a statement that Riyadh cut diplomatic ties and closed borders with its neighboring country Qatar that is "supporting terrorism and extremism."
