American clothing remains at the bottom of the list of quality imported clothing in China, a recently released white paper indicated.

During last year’s inspections, 13.23 percent of clothes imported from the U.S. failed to meet the standards set by China. Just above the U.S. were South Korea, Italy, Japan and Tunisia, at 12.83, 7.60, 7.23 and 6.56 percent respectively, China’s General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine disclosed in the paper.

In 2016, China’s product quality inspectors examined 78,823 batches of imported clothing. The defect rate in 2016 stood at 5.78 percent, down 0.09 percent year on year, the paper showed. The inspected products didn’t meet requirements for fiber content, color fastness or pH value, among other standards.

China has intensified its inspections of imported clothes for six straight years, the white paper showed. Incorrectly labeled products and clothes with unsatisfactory fiber content cannot be imported until they are manufactured in a way that meets requirements. Products that fail to meet security and hygiene standards are sent back or destroyed.
