Changsha port discovers package containing 792 ants

A total of 792 messor structor ants and more than 100 ant eggs were discovered in a parcel sent from France to China at a Changsha port, according to the Changsha Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau, China News reported on May 23.

The biggest messor structor ants discovered were 10 millimeters long, much larger than common domestic ants. Employees of the port speculated that the ants might be a new kind of pet favored by insect lovers.

The ant variety, mainly distributed in Eastern European countries such as Russia and Ukraine, along with western Asia, central Asia and Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in China, feeds on seeds and small insects. They reproduce at a high rate, which can endanger ecology and agriculture, as they have no natural predators in China.

According to the Law of the People's Republic of China on Entry and Exit Animal and Plant Quarantine, a person who violates quarantine regulations can be fined up to 5,000 RMB ($725). At present, the package is being temporarily detained by the bureau in Changsha.
