Images of a lethargic tiger covered in mud at a zoo in Nanjing, Jiangsu province have saddened animal lovers, many of who are demanding a thorough investigation into the animal’s living conditions.
The big cat, which was spotted at Zhenzhuquan Zoo in Nanjing on April 23, was covered in sludge after taking a dip in a pool. According to Thepaper.cn, the pool was filled with moss and black sludge, and contained dirty, smelly water.
In addition to the tiger’s poor living conditions, visitors to the zoo have also criticized its shabby wire fences, which scratch the tiger when it passes by.
“Even for an ordinary house cat, the owner is responsible for cleaning up it and keeping it healthy, not to mention that tigers are protected animals in China. I’m so disappointed to see the tiger [suffering] like this, and I hope authorities can take some action to help the animal,” said a visitor surnamed Lü.
In response to the public concern, an employee at the zoo, surnamed Fu, told Huaxi City Daily that the pool had been cleaned up.
“The pool is designed to prevent the tigers from hurting visitors. Due to recent rising temperatures, the leaves that fell into the pool began to rot. We will remodel it soon,” said Fu.
“The broken wire fence was destroyed by tiger cubs, who love to tear the wire for fun. We have already consolidated the enclosure,” Fu added.
