China urges protection of security in Syria after US strike

(CGTN)    16:36, April 07, 2017

China hopes everybody can protect security and uphold the peaceful progress in Syria in order to prevent the situation worsening further, said Hua Chunying, spokesperson of Chinese Foreign Ministry on Friday.

Hua made the remarks after the US targeted a military air base in western Syria with 59 Tomahawk cruise missiles on Friday morning local time‍, in a sharp shift from Washington’s policy in the war-ravaged country.

The Syrian army said in a statement that six soldiers were killed by the US‍ missile strike.

The strike is the first direct action by the US against Syrian government forces. Washington said the missiles were launched in response to a suspected chemical weapons attack on a rebel-held town on Tuesday.

China supports UN organizations to conduct an independent and holistic investigation on anyone that uses chemical weapons, said Hua.

“We don’t allow anyone, for any purpose, to use chemical weapons,” reiterated the spokesperson.
