Fathers-to-be experience simulated labor

A total of 10 expectant fathers from Wuhan, Hubei province experienced simulated labor on March 8, during an activity held by a local hospital. The simulation was intended as a tribute to mothers on Women's Day.

Two electrodes were attached to each participant in order to simulate the pain of labor through electric current. Pain intensity was sorted according to a 10-point scale; most participants began to sweat at level 4, and some cried out at level 6. Only three made it to level 10, at which point they were only able to withstand 15 seconds of the intense pain.

Peng Jian, director of the hospital's anesthesia department, said the intensity of pain that women experience in labor usually reaches the top of the scale, and the pain typically lasts six to eight hours or longer.

The director of the hospital's gynecology and obstetrics department, Jiang Huanling, stated that pregnancy and labor should never be the burden of mothers alone. She encouraged expectant fathers to participate in the whole process, from pregnancy to delivery to child care.
