The Chinese government attaches great importance to bilateral economic and trade cooperation with the Republic of Korea (ROK). Officials welcome foreign entities, including the ROK, to invest in China, and pledge to always respect and protect their rights and interests. However, the operation of foreign investors must be in compliance with Chinese laws and regulations, said a Chinese spokesperson on March 2.

Sun Jiwen, spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Commerce (MOC), made the comment in response to a question regarding Chinese people’s call to boycott South Korea's Lotte Group.

South Korea's Defense Ministry signed a land swap deal with Lotte on Feb. 28 to enable the deployment of its Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system. Chinese netizens immediately demonstrated strong opposition to the move, calling for punitive measures against Lotte.

According to Sun, the THAAD deployment by the U.S. and ROK will gravely jeopardize the strategic security interests of countries in the region, including China, in addition to undermining public support for cooperation between China and South Korea.

China is firm in its resolve to oppose the deployment of THAAD in the ROK. Relevant parties should halt the deployment process and go no further down that path.
