National healthcare spending in China grew 10 percent in 2016 to 1.32 trillion RMB, which accounts for 7 percent of the country's total fiscal expenditure, an authority at the Department of Social Security told China News Service on Feb. 22.
The source noted that the government is focused on universal healthcare coverage.
Government subsidies for the new rural cooperative healthcare system and the medical insurance for urban residents increased from an average of 120 RMB in 2010 to 420 RMB in 2016.
The source added that China is making efforts to establish a multi-level healthcare system guaranteeing every citizen access to medical resources. Basic medical care has been extended to 95 percent of the country, and the Ministry of Finance will continue to promote medical reform.
Total expenditure on healthcare in China increased from 1.45 trillion RMB in 2008 to 4.1 trillion RMB in 2015, which averages out to an annual increase of 16 percent.
