China's new-energy vehicles saw a notable upgrade in both technology and quality during 2016, China News Service reported. The announcement was made at the China EV 100 Forum on Jan. 15

At present, China is the world's largest electric vehicle market. Ouyang Minggao, China EV 100's executive vice president, said that China's new-energy vehicles are entering a growth period, but not necessarily a rapid one. China will further improve its competitiveness during the 13th Five-Year Plan period, as the key strategic goal of China's new-energy vehicle industry is to create lightweight and intelligent electric vehicles.

The five-year goal of China's new-energy vehicles is to make electric vehicles as commercially competitive as their fuel counterparts. China is progressively cutting government subsidies for electric vehicles, and will implement a point system for new-energy vehicles in the future.

According to the 13th Five-Year Plan, China's annual output of new-energy vehicles will reach 2 million by 2020. Sales of new-energy vehicles will account for 20 percent or more of the total in 2025; that number is expected to reach 40 percent by 2030.
