HK arrests 7 in connection with ‘Occupy protests’

(Global Times)    08:42, January 12, 2017

Hong Kong police on Wednesday arrested seven men who were involved in "Occupy protests" in November 2016 for illegal gathering and misbehavior in a public place and possession of weapons.

The police said the seven men, aged 17 to 29, including members of Demosisto and League of Social Democrats, are still in custody for investigation, the People's Daily reported on Wednesday.

The police added that they couldn't rule out the possibility of more arrests.

Demosisto confirmed the arrest of two members on its Facebook account, stating that the arrests were made because they organized an assembly on November 6, 2016 when groups protested against the interpretation of the Basic Law by the National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee, the People's Daily reported.

The Hong Kong police reiterated that they respect public's freedom of speech and freedom of assembly, and they will deal with the case in accordance with the law.

The NPC Standing Committee issued an interpretation of Article 104 of the Basic Law of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region in November, which stated that the newly elected members of the Legislative Council who advocated "Hong Kong independence" and disgraced the country and people would lose their eligibility to become lawmakers.
