"Hollywood is crawling with outsiders and foreigners. If you kick 'em all out, you'll have nothing to watch but football and mixed martial arts, which are not the arts... We need a principled press to hold power to account."

Meryl Streep

As one of the biggest celebrations of film and television in Hollywood, the Golden Globes grabs the attention of not only audiences in the US, but also the media in China as well.

"Actually China should have such an award [given by the press], but unfortunately it's hard for Chinese media to have such influence or credibility," movie critic Yuan Dengyu told the Global Times on Monday.

For Yuan, and many other critics in China, the Golden Globes are a predictor of the Academy Awards ceremony, which normally takes place after the Golden Globe Awards and usually sees similar results. Yet the Golden Globes are more than a way to examine Hollywood trends, it is also a way for them to learn from their peers overseas.

However, even though the film industry in the Chinese mainland is booming, Yuan said there is still a long way to go before the Chinese media can see the same level of success as the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

"First, there are limitations on media about what they can say in terms of criticism. Second, members of the media need to improve their expertise," Yuan said, noting that there are only a few film reviewers in the mainland that have the public's trust.

He recalled that he once tried to get a group of his press friends together to form a review site for movies, but the attempt failed because it was difficult for the reviewers to stay neutral and objective.

Another benefit to watching the Golden Globes, according to Yuan, is that it can help predict what films will be imported into China.

"La La Landis definitely going to come to the mainland market," he said.

Just minutes after the Golden Globes finished, iQiyi, one of China's largest streaming platforms, announced that it had purchased the copyrights and would exclusively stream La La Land, as well as Moonlight, the film which won the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture - Drama.

While the Golden Globes is a big event for critics in China, except for fans who follow their beloved celebrities, most Chinese audiences don't care about the event as much as they do about the Academy Awards.

The winners

The biggest winner of the night was definitely director Damien Chazelle's musical La La Land, which won each of the seven categories in which it was nominated, including Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy, Best Director and the best actor and actress awards for a musical or comedy.

Chazelle's last film, Whiplash, was also a big hit. Nominated in five categories at the 87th Academy Awards in 2016, it won three - Best Film Editing, Best Sound Mixing and Best Supporting Actor.

Chazelle pays tribute to the golden age of musicals in Hollywood with La La Land, which was already critically acclaimed long before the Golden Globes nominations were announced.

"This is a film for dreamers," Emma Stone said while accepting the best actress award for her role as aspiring actress Mia in the film. "I think that hope and creativity are two of the most important things in the world. And that's what this movie is about."

Her co-star Ryan Gosling won the best actor award for his role in the film as Sebastian the pianist.

They are two of the most mentioned celebrities at the Golden Globes on Sina Weibo. A GIF of Stone's ex-boyfriend Andrew Garfield, who was nominated for his performance in Hacksaw Ridge, applauding her as she walked toward the stage was reposted numerous times on Sina Weibo with the title "How sweet."

Casey Affleck won best actor in a drama for his role in Manchester by the Sea.

Best actress in a drama went to French actress Isabelle Huppert for the French rape-revenge film Elle, which also won Best Foreign Language Film.

Previously many expected Natalie Portman to win the award for her performance as Jackie Kennedy in Jackie.

In television categories, the stars of The Night Managerwon big. Tom Hiddleston won best actor, while Hugh Laurie and Olivia Colman won the best supporting actor and actress awards respectively.

Hiddleston was the center of attention as Chinese netizens congratulated him on his win, even though many other celebrities also won awards at the Golden Globes. A global heartthrob, Hiddleston has a massive amount of fans in China.

Political confrontation

One of the most stunning moments of the night occurred when screen legend Meryl Streep took aim at the rise in xenophobia in the US after the election of Donald Trumpwhile accepting the lifetime achievement award.

"Hollywood is crawling with outsiders and foreigners. If you kick 'em all out, you'll have nothing to watch but football and mixed martial arts, which are not the arts," Streep said.

The 67-year-old Streep is widely considered one of the greatest actresses of her generation. She has been nominated 29 times for a Golden Globe, winning eight times, and nominated 19 times for an Academy Award, of which she has won three.

"We need the principled press to hold power to account," Streep said, to applause from the celebrities at the event.
