Another giant leatherback sea turtle was captured off the coast in south China’s Guangdong province. The capture happened weeks after authorities in Guangdong opened an investigation into the slaughter and sale of a protected leatherback sea turtle by local fishermen.
The previous case grew to international prominence after cellphone video circulated showing the 200-kilogram (440-pound) turtle being sliced into pieces and sold to eager villagers in a fishing village in Guangdong. The meat sold for about 70 yuan ($10) per kilogram.
This time the protected sea turtle measured over 250-kilogram was captured by a young man Wu Zengxing, a fisherman lives on Naozhou Island. Wu said there was a local restaurateur offering him 5000 yuan ($720) for the turtle. But the offer was turned down by Wu, who later released the turtle back to sea.
