9-year-old girl and father earn living selling fruit on street

In an open-air market in Qingdao, Shandong province, a 9-year-old girl, Liu Jiahui, sells fruit alongside her father. As the youngest vendor in the market, Liu works and does her homework during the day, while she and father spend nights sleeping inside the booth.

Like many girls, Liu used to enjoy a happy and carefree family life. However, a car accident thrust her family into heavy debt, forcing her to move with her father from Tai'an to Qingdao to sell fruit.

The temperature in Qingdao has already dropped to 0 C in December, and the shed in which Liu and her father sleep is insulated only by canvas. However, the little girl is still content.

“As long as I am with my father, I am not cold,” she said.

During the period she has spent helping in the stall, Liu has learned to cook and acquired basic domestic skills. After missing the registration deadline for primary school, Liu cannot attend classes. When business is light, she studies independently.

“I give myself daily homework assignments - sometimes copying letters, sometimes doing exercises. For tasks I don’t understand, I ask my father or the customers who come to buy fruit,” she explained.

According to Liu's father, the girl's academic performance is very good. He is firm that Liu will continue her formal education next year.
