Fu Chuanchuan, a disabled orphan in Anhui province, charges only a nominal fee when he mends shoes in the street. Always generous with his labor, he views it as a favor to society.
Fu was abandoned by his father at the Fuyang train station 20 years ago, and was later taken in by a local children’s welfare home. To cure his various diseases, the leaders of the welfare house took Fu to several big cities for advanced treatments. Along the way, Fu also acquired the ability to make keys and mend shoes and zippers.
“The welfare house offered me a warm home. A man should be grateful for what he owns and try to create value for society through his own efforts,” Fu said.
Fu offers his mending services for extremely low prices, even waiving his fee altogether for elderly customers. Every day after work, he buys fruit and other foods for his companions at the welfare house with the money he makes. He also offers them gifts during the holidays.
“I have been living here since I was a child. The people here are all my sisters and brothers. We are family,” Fu said.
Speaking of his father who left him behind years ago, Fu showed no resentment at all.
“My family was poor, and I was ill at that time. If it were not for my disability, my father would not have abandoned me,” he said.
