(People's Daily Online)    15:29, December 07, 2016

Hit by a bitterly cold front, the Huzhong area of Heilongjiang province saw a new record low for the season of -41.2 degrees Celsius early in the winter, according to the Huzhong Meteorological Administration. The forecast also indicates that the cold weather will continue, with temperatures of -35 C from Dec. 6 to 7.

Huzhong is known as the coldest town in China, given its -4.3 C annual average temperature and -53.2 C historic low. Huzhong is located in the Greater Khingan Mountains in northeastern Heilongjiang province. On Dec. 6, a temperature of -39.7 C was registered in the town of Huzhong, while the thermometer read -41.2 C on Dabai Mountain.

Local residents put on many layers warm clothing, though white frost still appeared on the hats and masks of hardy pedestrians. Sanitation workers and ice sculptors were also not deterred from their work.
