Environmental protection microblog attracts fans

The Weibo account "Huanbaobu Fabu," or "environmental protection broadcast," is believed to be the official account of China's Ministry of Environmental Protection. The account attracted over 20,000 followers in two days after posting its first message. A ministry WeChat account was opened on the same day.

On Nov. 23, the ministry's Weibo account delivered a message using a casual tone: "Dear all, nice to meet you on Weibo. Thank you for your attention and support." The message was reposted and commented on by more than 3,000 Weibo users.

Some netizens believe the ministry is courageous to open a Weibo account during winter, when smog is among the top environmental issues across the country. Others hailed it as a positive step forward.

The Weibo and WeChat accounts serve as windows into the ministry's activities and policies. They are also a platform through which regular citizens can communicate their ideas and suggestions, according to an official from the publicity and education department of the ministry on Nov. 24.

Environmental protection departments across the country will open Weibo and WeChat accounts by June 5, 2017, in time for World Environment Day.
