Ancient city wall in Hunan province

A well-preserved city wall attracts crowds of tourists to Chenzhou, Hunan province. The wall is said to be left by the Taiping Army, which led a massive rebellion in China that lasted from 1850 to 1864.

The city wall, found beneath a famous "skylight" in an underground cave, is 41 meters long, 5.5 meters high and 2.7 meters thick. It can accomodate several thousand people.

Near the skylight stands a monument that records when and where the Taiping Army attacked and retreated from Chenzhou, as well as how they got along with locals, in the 10th year of Emperor Xian Feng's reign (1851-1861).

The magnificent skylight is the only geological formation of its kind in southern Hunan. It is 130 meters deep and forms a striking tableau. The formation has been well preserved by local residents as well as the government due to its beauty and historical significance.
