Samsung recalls Galaxy Note 7 smartphones in China

(Xinhua)    16:05, October 11, 2016

BEIJING, Oct. 11 -- Samsung has filed a plan with China's consumer quality watchdog to recall 190,984 Galaxy Note 7 smartphones sold on the Chinese mainland, due to an overheating problem.

There have been 20 cases of Galaxy Note 7 phones catching fire or overheating on the mainland, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine said in a statement Tuesday.

To protect consumers, on Monday Samsung halted the production and sale of the model and offered consumers two alternatives.

Consumers could either exchange for another Samsung model, with the company repaying the price difference and offering a 300 yuan (44.71 U.S. dollars) shopping voucher, or they could demand a full reimbursement, the statement said.

The Galaxy Note 7 made its debut in August, but Samsung announced global recall plans in early September blaming faulty battery cells.

The company recalled 1,858 Note 7 phones in China on September 14, offering new replacement phones of the same model that complied with related requirements.
