"On the occasion of the G20 Hangzhou Summit, I want to offer my congratulations for a successful convening.
The G20 is a vital international forum where leaders of the world’s major economies work together to strengthen global economic security and increase prosperity.
For the first time the issue of development has been given priority in the global policy framework – and that global health has been included in the G20 development agenda.
It’s also great to see the strong commitment of the Hangzhou Summit to formulate an action plan to implement the UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
China contributed significantly to the success of the Millennium Development Goals by improving the health of its population and by lifting over 600 million people out of poverty in less than three decades.
China’s experience and achievements – and its focus on leveraging innovation to drive positive change – offer valuable insights for other developing countries as they tackle similar challenges and strive to meet the ambitious targets of the Sustainable Development Goals.
For nearly a decade, our foundation has worked with our Chinese partners – first to address domestic challenges in China like tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS – and more recently to support China in fighting poverty and becoming an even stronger global development partner.
I’m confident that China will continue to make progress in its own development. And I’m optimistic that China will play an even greater role in helping other countries achieve progress on their own.
We look forward to continuing to support China in this important work," said Bill Gates, the Co-chair and Trustee of Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
