Chinese scientific journals are winning increasing global recognition, with several natural science journals ranking among the top 15, according to Thomson Reuters’ Journal Citation Reports (JCR) of 2016.

As first-time candidate, National Science Review (NSR), published by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), was ranked among the top five, following Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the U.S., according to this year’s JCR, which was issued on Monday in the U.S.

Meanwhile, Cell Research, published by Nature Publishing Group in partnership with the CAS Shanghai Institutes for Biological Sciences (SIBS), was ranked 9th with an impact factor of 14.812 among the core journals on life science.

Cell Research began to rank among the top 10 percent of life science journals on cell biology in 2010, China Science Daily (CSD) reported.

Slightly on a regress, Light: Science & Applications (LSA), published by CAS Changchun Institute of Optics, Fine Mechanics and Physics, saw an impact factor of 13.6, down from last year’s 14.6, the JCR showed.

Chinese scientists need to establish a platform by themselves to better speak for themselves, instead of just being subject of scrutiny from the West, Li Dangsheng, a deputy editor-in-chief of Cell Research, was quoted as saying by CSD.

According to SIBS director Jiang Hualiang, some 70 percent of the world’s scientific research achievements were published on U.S.-led journals, helping the U.S. to possess a large quantity of science data.

Jiang noted that it is crucial for China to cultivate high-level scientific journals to not only boost domestic innovation and development, but also to play a strategically important role to possess and make use of more scientific data, CSD reported.
