Thousands of people are being airlifted out of the danger zone, as an uncontrolled wildfire continues to spread in the western Canadian province of Alberta.

Another 55-hundred people have been moved out of the area north of the city of Fort McMurray on Friday.

This follows 8-thousand being airlifted out the previous day.

Alberta's Premier Rachel Notley says the fire, now roughly the size of Singapore, is showing no signs of slowing down.

"The fire continues to burn out of control. Today the fire covers over 101,000 hectares, winds continue to blow the fire to the southeast of the city last night. "

The winds are expected to shift, pushing the flames away from Fort McMurray, but toward more heavily-forested areas.

Notely has announced her provincial government is set to offer financial help to those who have been forced from their homes in Fort McMurray.

"Cabinet today authorized the government to provide emergency financial assistance to people who have been displaced. We will provide 1250 dollars per adult and 500 dollars per dependent. We will provide this assistance to approximately 80,000 people. We hope to deliver these funds to you in the coming days - by Wednesday next week. This will cost the government approximately 100 million dollars. Our hope is that the immediate crisis will under control as soon as possible."

Well over a thousand firefighters, along with a number of helicopters and air tankers, are working towards putting out the fire, which broke out nearly a week ago, prompting one of the largest evacuations in Canadian history.
