China's railway giants growing steadily at home, looking overseas for high-value deals

The total sum of overseas deals signed by China's two railway giants, CRG and CRCC, in 2015 comes to several billion dollars, according to the annual reports of the two companies.

China Railway Group’s (CRG) overseas deals exceeded 10 billion dollars for the first time in 2015. Meanwhile, the sum of China Railway Construction Corporation’s (CRCC) overseas contracts was 86.29 billion yuan, accounting for 9.09 percent of revenue from all of the company’s newly signed contracts.

Statistics show that the operation revenue of CRG Ltd. was 621.09 billion yuan in 2015. Compared with revenue in 2014, that number increased by 1.76 percent. The company’s net profit in 2015 was 12.26 billion yuan, increasing 18.32 percent from 2014.

The 2015 operation revenue for CRCC Ltd. was a bit less than that of CRCC at 600.54 billion yuan, but still 1.22 percent higher than in 2014. The company’s net profit was 12.65 billion yuan, 7.76 percent higher than in 2014. The earnings per share of CRCC stock was 0.98 yuan in 2015, the highest ever since the company went public.

The two companies have continued to maintain relatively high market shares in the industry. Both companies are also in the process of expanding abroad, and both are receiving a good amount of new business.

A financial analyst said that performance of the two companies falls within expectations. It is likely that both companies will continue benefiting from China's increased investment in railways, urban rail transportation, and infrastructure improvements that fall under the Belt and Road Initiative.

Another important source of new business is international passages. Although the overseas marketplace currently provides only a small portion of both companies’ overall business, there is undoubtedly a growing demand outside of China.

In 2016, China will invest at least 800 billion yuan in railways, which means over 3,200 kilometers of new tracks put into service.
