Shenzhen lures talents from Silicon Valley

San Francisco, Mar. 29--China's Shenzhen, a well-known innovation hub, boosts its technology-driven economy by luring more overseas talents with series of competitions.

The 1st Innovation Competition of International Talents (Silicon Valley), held by Shenzhen Municipal Government recently, provides a total cash prize of 880,000 US Dollars, government incentives of 100 million US Dollars, venture capital fund pool of 100 million US Dollars to attract innovative talents from Silicon Valley to start their businesses in Shenzhen.

The contesting projects cover mobile Internet, electronic science and technology, biotech and life science, advanced manufacturing, new material as well as clean technology.

Wang Junming, science and technology counselor with the Chinese Consulate General in San Francisco, said at the event that Silicon Valley is the front-runner of technology and innovation. Shenzhen is one of China's most active areas in innovation and manufacturing with multiple culture, comprehensive industry chains and vibrant startup atmosphere.

Wang said that in response to the call for "mass entrepreneurship and innovation by all", the competition provides a development platform for talents to learn from each other and to innovate.

Liu Zhaohui, deputy director of Shenzhen Longgang District NPC Committee, said that "Shenzhen is the first city given the title of the 'National Independent Innovation Demonstration Zone' in China." Shenzhen has active enterprise innovation capability and advanced innovative infrastructure, which needs innovative talents to explore opportunities there.

Lior Akavia, co-founder and CEO of Seebo, told the audience that "When you talk about innovation and hardware in China, you are talking about Shenzhen."

Silicon Valley joins other four cities, including Sydney, Munich, Tel Aviv and Tokyo to hold the divisional competitions. The winner in the Silicon Valley section received a cash prize of 5,000 US Dollars.

On the day of the finals, 25 finalists will compete in demonstrations and debates. The final competition held in Shenzhen will provide a cash prize of 80,000, 50,000 and 30,000 US Dollars for first, second and third place, respectively.

Besides awards, Shenzhen will also provide preferential policies, such as priority to access local incubators, incentives for intellectual property creations and startup tutorship services, to help winners to settle down in Shenzhen.
