China objected to the United Nations discriminating against China among other developing countries in assessing Member States’ Contributions towards the Regular Budget and refused to accept the scale of the assessment of Member State contributions as they are more than China can afford, said ambassador Wang Min, Deputy Permanent Representative of China to the United Nations.
The scale of assessments is based on a country's capacity to pay. China’s contribution to Regular Budget and Peacekeeping Budget will increase sharply according to the current assessment method based on a country's capacity to pay, said Wang. He added that China does indeed have a large economy but its per capita income is low. China is still a developing country, which should be seriously considered when assessing its capacity to pay.
China’s capacity to pay should be assessed objectively, and it objects to the scale of the assessment of Member State contributions that are more than it can afford, Wang pointed out.
He also added China is a responsible country and willing to pay its due contribution as long as the assessment is fair and reasonable.
