The Chinese army held a nuclear emergency drill codenamed "Medical Service Force-2015C" recently at a training base of the PLA (People's Liberation Army) Academy of Military Medical Sciences. This is the first comprehensive drill involving all medical and rescue forces of the PLA.

The drill kicked off in early July. Two nuclear emergency medical rescue detachments from the Shenyang and Guangzhou Military Area Commands of the PLA respectively went through a whole-process test on the four capabilities of emergency response, long-range maneuvering, self-supporting and rescue operation command and management.

Since 1940s, the discovery and use of atomic energy has brought about great changes to the progress of human civilization, but meanwhile it has been the sword of Damocles hanging over all the nuclear powers.

The accidents at the Three Miles Island, Chernobyl and Fukushima nuclear power plants not only caused huge damages to the people's health, environment and economic development, but also posed huge impact on the development of world's nuclear industry.

China is a nuclear military power. As of 2015, it has more than 50 nuclear power generating units both in operation and under construction, with its total capacity ranking the fourth in the world. It is critical and of great significance to strengthen its nuclear emergency medical rescue capability.
