Sri Lanka and China has a long friendship, and now we’re focusing on strengthening the youth cooperation because we’re very old, so the best thing is to create a young group to continue the friendship between the two countries, said Indrananda Abeysekera, President of the Sri Lanka-China Social and Cultural Cooperation Association.

President Abeysekera received an exclusive interview with People.cn and talked about Sri Lanka China relations Friday during a trip to China to promote communications between the two countries.

Established in 1997, the Sri Lanka-China Social and Cultural Association is committed to promoting people-to-people contact in trade, cultural and social exchanges and exploring other new types of friendship between Sri Lanka and China. It had also participated in the disaster relief work after the Wenchuan earthquake.

Abeysekera is an old friend of China who first came to visit the country in 1987. Currently based in Sri Lanka, he had worked in China for 12 years and visited the Great Wall for more than 100 times. He was given the title "Goodwill Ambassador of China and Sri Lanka" in 2004 for his special contribution to strengthening the ties between the two countries.

The trip also took the president to Huai’an with which the association wants to start a friendly relationship. Huai’an is the hometown of former Chinese Premier Zhou Enlai, who enjoys great popularity in Sri Lanka.
