The Prime Minister of Finland announced as the Official Patron

BEIJING, September 18 (People’s Daily Online) Design Innovations from Finland, the first in the series of Pure Finland events was held at the Finnish Ambassador’s residence in Beijing on Sept. 18, 2014.

Speaking at the launch event, the Ambassador of Finland, Mr. Jari Gustafsson announced that the Prime Minister of Finland, Mr. Alexander Stubb is the Official Patron of the Pure Finland events held in Beijing in autumn 2014.

Finnish-Chinese relations thrive and there are more than 300 Finnish companies that do business with China, but not so many Finnish consumer and lifestyle brands are widely known to the Chinese customers.

Pure Finland is a project that brings together almost 30 Finnish public and private organizations. The Pure Finland events will present several cool aspects about Finland - its dynamic consumer brands; attractive options for tourists, investors and students; latest scientific and technological innovations; unique cultural creations and many others – between September and December 2014, mainly in Beijing.

Finland is a country that has one of the most developed economies (GDP per capita over 35,000 EUR), that has some of the most innovative citizens (more patent applications per capita than almost any other nation) and one of purest environments (Finland has systematically featured at the top of Environmental Policy Index) in the world. This is regardless of the fact that there are just 5 million Finns – about one fourth of Beijing’s population – and that the country lacks also many other resources, like fuel, coal and natural gas.

Maybe it is just because of those limitations that Finns have been compelled to be innovative in order to increase their standard of living. The fact that 77 percent of Finland’s territory is covered by forests and that those forests have a long time been a major source of livelihood for the nation, means that Finns have a very close relationship with the nature and that they want to take a good care of it. Thus, sustainability is a major element in Finnish innovations and in design, for example.

The ultimate aim behind the Finnish innovation and sustainable thinking is a good life, including a good health for the people, of course. Any innovation, product or service is not worthwhile, if it does not serve this particular purpose. For the past decades many Chinese have linked Finland to the concept of putting the people first. It continues to be an excellent way to describe the Finnish thinking. One way to implement this type of thinking is to build the society on law.
