BEIJING, July 2 -- Chinese President Xi Jinping has congratulated Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz on his re-election as president of Mauritania.
In a message dated Monday, Xi said China and Mauritania enjoy profound traditional friendship. Since they established diplomatic ties 49 years ago, the two countries have maintained healthy bilateral relations, enhanced mutual political trust, achieved fruitful results in economic and trade cooperation, and conducted more people-to-people and cultural exchanges, he said.
Xi said that China attaches great importance to its relations with Mauritania and is willing to work with the African nation to deepen cooperation in various fields for the benefits of the two countries and peoples.
On Sunday, Mauritania's electoral authorities announced that incumbent President Abdel Aziz had won Saturday's presidential election.
