SEOUL, May 20 -- South Korea delivered condolences to the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) on Tuesday morning over the recent collapse of an apartment building in Pyongyang, an official of Seoul's Unification Ministry said.

The Unification Ministry official said via phone that the Red Cross sent a consolation message in the name of its president as of 10 a.m. to the DPRK counterpart via the dialogue channel in the truce village of Panmunjom.

"(South Korea) feels deeply sad about the loss of many lives in the accident that happened in Pyongyang on May 13 and conveys deep condolences to it," the message said. It came two days after the DPRK's official KCNA news agency said that an apartment in the Phyongchon District in Pyongyang collapsed "as the construction of an apartment was not done properly and officials supervised and controlled it in an irresponsible manner."

The KCNA said rescue operations came to an end on Saturday, but it gave no other details such as the number of casualties.

South Korea believed that the accident could have caused a number of fatalities as 92 households may have been living in the 23-story building.

Asked whether to propose to the DPRK for assistance, Unification Ministry spokesman Kim Eui-do told reporters Monday that no damage conditions have been reported yet exactly, noting that such proposal could be made after confirming the exact status of damages.
