Gong joined the
national A team in 1996. One of the smallest members of China's
national squad, she moved quickly to cover the court and had great
mental strength. Undertakeing endurance training under the guidance
of coach Li Yongbo by running up a mountain 500 metres above sea
level, with a gradient of 50-60 degrees and in everyday training
is reported to wear special clothing filled with sand weighing 6kg.
To strengthen her arm she throws a ball similar in weight to that
used in the shot put and is known to take such a ball with her when
travelling overseas to tournaments.
