Tibet Benefits from Poverty-Relief Fund for Education
In the first year when "State Compulsory Education Project in Poverty-Stricken Areas" implemented in Tibet, a total of 73.63 million yuan from the fund was used in renovating and expansion of 52 middle and primary schools by the Central and local governments. The money invested and constructions completed have both exceeded the planned amount of the year.
The "State Compulsory Education Project in Poverty-Stricken Areas" is a nationwide basic education project known to have the largest state appropriation made among all other special funds ever set up by the Central government in China.
Apart from construction of school buildings, 8,000 sets of tables and stools, 130 thousand copies of books and 41 teaching appliances have been purchased and 831 teachers and school heads have been trained. For a rational distribution of education resources and school institutions in the region there has been seen an average growth in the number of students in schools aided by the project from 304 in 1996 to 377 in 1998.
