China Fighting Against Flood

State Councilor Visits Flood-Damaged Parts Of Northwest China

State Councilor Ismail Amat asked government departments to be certain that people from flood- damaged parts of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region have a safe winter.

The remark came during his visit to Xinjiang from August 19 to 23, where he said that the disaster relief work has had some initial success, but a greater effort is still needed to help people who suffered from the floods return to a normal life.

The climate in Xinjiang has been unusual since July. Most rivers in the region were reported to have risen above the danger mark because of heavy rains and there were flash floods in the southern and northern part of Xinjiang that caused heavy damage.

He asked that a study of grain shortages be done immediately so that they can have their grain shortages made up soon.

He also asked local areas to try every way to rebuild irrigation works damaged by the floods so as not to delay autumn planting and next year's crops.
