China Fighting Against Flood

130,000 Visitors Pass Three Gorges Dam Safely

Some 130,000 visitors who were stranded in the area of the Three Gorges Project, China's largest hydroelectricity project now under construction, due to worsening floods on the Yangtze River, had all safely left there by land by 20:00 July 20.

Experts pointed out that because the water level inside the dam area stands at a relatively high level, shipping there has been halted three times since June 30, which resulted in a lot of passengers being forced to stay on their ships.

The local government mobilized thousands of coaches to help these passengers, including some foreign visitors, out of trouble.

By 8:00 tonight, all the passengers on 810 ships, including 2, 900 foreign visitors, had left the dam area on the upper reaches of the Yangtze by land, and work is going on to move the remaining visitors out of the area.

The biggest flood peak on the Yangtze this year passed Yichang, where the dam is located, at 13:00 this afternoon. The water level at the Project has accordingly dropped. However, shipping there will continue to be halted for a certain time. (Xinhua)
