Flooding on Middle Reaches of Yangtze River Worsens

     The latest information from the flood-stricken provinces of Jiangxi, Hubei, and Hunan says that flooding on the middle reaches of the Yangtze River is becoming more serious.

     According to figures from local hydrological departments, the water levels of Poyang Lake and at the Jiujiang section of the Yangtze River have exceeded the danger lines for 19 days.

     At 8 a.m. today, the water level at Jiujiang hit 22.05 m, 2.55 m over the danger mark.

     Water levels at two hydrological stations at Poyang Lake reached 21.52 m and 21.59 m, respectively, 2.52 m and 2.59 m over the danger line.

     By 2 p.m. doday, the water level at Yichang, a major city in central China's Hubei Province, reached 52.87 m., 1.19 m higher than yesterday, and the level at Wuhan, capital of the province, hit 28.37 m., 0.25 m. higher than yesterday.

     According to the Yangtze River Water Conservation Committee, the biggest flood peak of the season so far is expected to reach Yichang tomorrow afternoon, bringing the local water level to an estimated 53.3 m. The peak is expected to hit Hankou on July 23.

     With continuous heavy rainfall, four major rivers and Dongting Lake in central China's Hunan Province have also seen their water levels greatly increased, and at Chenglinji, the lake's outlet, it was as high as 34 m.

     Facing the serious threat of rampant flooding, the local governments and people are going all out to protect their homes at all costs. (Xinhua)
