Flood Threat Growing In Eastern Chinese Province
The water levels of major rivers, lakes and reservoirs in Jiangxi Province, east China, have all been above the danger marks since July 1 and posed a growing threat to the northern part of the province.
Because of contined rainfall on the upper and middle reaches of the Yangtze River, its level at Jiujiang city in Jiangxi, had risen to 21.77 meters at eight o'clock yesterday, 2.27 meters above the danger line, and the level at Poyang Lake at Hukou climbed to 21.22 meters, or 2.22 meters above the danger mark, causing leaks and cave-ins at some waterlogged levees and dikes.
Floodwaters overflowed into Hukou County and parts of Xingzi County on July 14. The rain has not stopped and the local government has asked for a greater effort to guard against severe flooding and has provided more flood-control materials in regions near the Yangtze and Poyang Lake.
About 500,000 people are now keeping a watch on levees and dikes day and night. (Xinhua)
