China Fighting Against Flood

Ministries Allocate Money to Flooded Areas

The Ministry of Civil Affairs and the Ministry of Finance have allocated 102 million yuan and 9,300 tents to 11 provinces and ethnic autonomous regions affected by the summer floods by July 10.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Civil Affairs has sent emergency work units to the provinces of Jiangxi, Anhui, Hunan, Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Hubei to direct the anti-flood efforts.

Natural calamities including droughts, floods, windstorms, hailstorms and earthquakes have affected many parts of the country this year. Since the beginning of the flooding season, floods have brought huge losses to provinces along the Yangtze River, the largest river in China.

Meanwhile, people are worried about a possible deluge along the Yellow River, the second largest in the country. The Yellow River often changed its course in history, causing enormous casualties and economic losses.

Li Keqiang, director-general of the Yellow River Anti-Flood Headquarters and governor of Henan Province, recently made an inspection tour in the areas vulnerable to flooding.

Henan, a long-time victim of Yellow River floods, has been busy preparing for the possible arrival of severe floods. A flood- blocking zone has been set up in Puyang City, home to 1.2 million people and the hugely valuable Zhongyuan Oilfield, with its assets worth an estimated nine billion yuan.

Local governments and farmers have built up many flood- sheltering platforms in the area in recent years. (Xinhua)
