Jiangsu Prepares to Combat Floods
Areas along the mighty Yangtze River in southern part of east China's Jiangsu Province have been put on alert against possible grave floods.
As a result of heavy rainstorms since June 6, the areas in the Taihu Lake and the Guchenghu Lake reported rainfall two to four times the amount of normal years.
By two o'clock July 1 afternoon, the average water level of the Taihu Lake was reported at 4.63 meters, only 18 cm below its record high. And the water level of the Guchenghu Lake was recorded at 12.61 meters, four centimeters higher than the record.
Official forecasts predict that there will be more rain along the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River in Jiangsu.
In a bid to counter the danger, Jiangsu has prepared great flood-prevention controls, arranged flood-fighting materials and equipment, as well as mobilizing vehicles and manpower reserves in case of urgent need.
At the same time, the provincial government will strictly punish illegal activities involving cutting down of trees or creating obstacles in the river. (Xinhua)
