China Bans Falun Gong

Top Lawmaker Hails Educational Drive, Battle Against Falun Gong

China's top lawmaker Li Peng recently spoke highly of the current "Three Stresses" campaign, a nationwide educational drive to stress theoretical study, political consciousness and healthy trends among the people.

Li, chairman of the National People's Congress Standing Committee, emphasized the leading role of the Communist Party of China (CPC) in the work of the country's top legislative body, whose job is to symbolize the Party's will through legislation.

Li is also a member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau.

China's legislative work should learn from foreign experience, but never adopt foreign legal theories and systems mechanically, he added.

Li made the remarks during the recent hearing of a report on the "Three Stresses" campaign in the legislative body.

He also spoke about the ongoing drive against Falun Gong, an illegal, anti-government organization masquerading as a health-promotion group. Headed by Li Hongzhi, the cult conducted illegal gathering at Zhongnanhai, where the CPC and the central government are headquartered, and some media offices, in an attempt to make political gains.

Li said that the struggle against the Falun Gong cult is a serious ideological and political struggle.

The case of Falun Gong is not a coincidence, Li said. He urged steps to improve education in socialist and communist ideals among cadres and ordinary people, in the course of the fight against Falun Gong. (Xinhua)
