Chinese Scientists Slam Falun Gong
More than 20 well-known Chinese scientists attended a meeting on August 11 held by the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST) to further expose and criticize Falun Gong cult.
Zhou Guangzhao, vice-chairman of the National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee and president of the CAST, said scientists should think deeply about the Falun Gong phenomenon.
Falun Gong cult has poisoned the minds of many people and undermined social stability by forming the illegal organization. If the cult is allowed to develop, it will undermine the country's drive to realize modernizations through science and technology, said Zhou.
Therefore, the fight against Falun Gong and pseudo-science will last for a long time, he said, adding that scientists should shoulder the responsibility to spread scientific knowledge and the scientific spirit, methods, and attitude.
According to Hong Zhaoguang, a professor with the Beijing Anzhen Hospital, more than 1.78 million senior citizens above the age of 60 are now living in Beijing.
Many of these elderly folks suffer from chronic diseases, and Falun Gong cult deceived many of them with promises of improved health, Hong said.
When asked why so many well-educated people believed in Falun Gong, renowned physicist Zhao Zhongxian, who is also an academician with the Chinese Academy of Sciences, said everyone has limits in knowing the truth, the universe, and society, and scientists are no exception.
Zhou Guangzhao said Chinese scientists must study more philosophy, which is the basis for scientific breakthroughs and innovations.
Scientists attending today's meeting shared the opinion that it is the responsibility of scientists to fight against superstition and popularize science among ordinary people. (Xinhua)
